Carbon dioxide sensors can be placed in the plenum and headspace below and above the stored grain mass to track the onset of spoilage due to biological activity from molds and insects.

The number and placement of sensors, and the interpretation of sensor readings are key to effectively monitoring conditions in a stored grain mass and managing optimal windows of aeration based on real-time weather data. This first article in this series focuses on temperature sensors and explores the number needed on a cable as well as cable placement to effectively monitor the quality of stored grain.

Temperature sensors used for stored grain monitoring consist of either thermocouples or thermistors. According to manufacturers, type "T” thermocouple (TC) sensors are commonly used to manufacture TC-based temperature cables for stored grain monitoring applications. Type "T” thermocouples consist of one copper wire and one wire made of constantan, an alloy approximately 57% copper and 43% nickel.

The junction of the two wires is the actual temperature sensing point, which is rated up to 600°F (315°C). Depending on duty level (i.e., tensile strength) and customer preference, sensor points are spaced 3, 5, 6, 7 or 8 feet (0.9, 1.5, 1.8, 2.1 or 2.4 meters) apart in wire bundles inside heat-shrunk vinyl or nylon sleeves. These are placed along a load-bearing steel rope and extruded together inside a vinyl or nylon outer jacket.

Together with the lead wire they make up a temperature cable that can be installed once it is cut to the correct length and fitted with hanging hardware. Lead wire carries the thermocouple voltage signals from each cable to a multiplexing junction box that can convert analog into digital signals. Lead wire consists of groups that contain a common constantan wire and typically six copper wires that are dedicated to each individual thermocouple within the cable.

Thermistors are temperature sensors whose electrical resistance changes in response to a change in temperature. According to manufacturers, Negative Temperature Coefficient (NTC) thermistor sensors, which exhibit a decrease in resistance as temperature increases, commonly are used to manufacture thermistor-based temperature cables for stored grain monitoring applications. They are produced using powdered metal oxides that determine their electrical characteristics.

NTC thermistor sensors have a non-linear temperature versus resistance relationship and are capable of measuring temperatures up to 572°F (300°C). They are generally very rugged, extremely stable, and highly accurate devices. Depending on duty level (i.e., tensile strength) and customer preference, sensor points are spaced 4 or 8 feet (1.2 or 2.4 meters) apart on a digital sensing cable placed inside a sturdy outer tube. This allows the temperature-sensing element to be retracted if it needed to be replaced in the future.

Ryan hopes to get an Assembly sponsor for the bill for the proposal to be included in a broader legislative package on guns that Albany Democrats are aiming to pass this upcoming week.

"I’ve had several calls today from numerous Assembly members looking to co-sponsor … So I think there’s going to be a good appetite in the Assembly and in the Senate,” he added.

State law allows New Yorkers to buy bulletproof vests, but wearing one while committing a gun crime can land violators in prison for up to five years.

Sales of such tactical gear have increased in recent years amid rising violent crime, civil unrest and the ongoing war in Ukraine.

"We can’t get our regular in-store inventory so easily so it’s kind of created a bit of a backlog,” Brad Pedell, co-owner of 221B Tactical in Midtown, told the Post.

Pedell added that an effective ban on online sales of bulletproof vests would hurt the bottom line of his business, which sells an array of tactical gear.

He also questioned whether the bill, if is passes before state lawmakers adjourn for the year on June 2, would really deter criminals beyond being an inconvenience for law-abiding citizens.

"A fraction of people who are buying body armor are buying it for the sake of committing a felonious, heinous crime and protecting themselves while they’re in the process of doing that as compared with people who are just scared,” Pedell said.

Ryan, who represents a district near the site of the recent racist-fueled massacre at a Buffalo supermarket, responded to such criticism by saying a ban on online sales would at least reduce access for would-be mass killers to some degree, potentially saving lives in the process.

"If your business is to sell body armor worn by mass shooters to defy and evade law enforcement then you are in the wrong line of work. And there is no one solution to gun violence and to the scourges of mass shootings so we need to find many ways to save lives by chipping away at the problem and one part of the problem is the proliferation of body armor sales to civilians,” Ryan added.

Prosecutors in the State of Mexico, which borders Mexico City, said three detectives were also wounded in the gun battle. The shooting occurred about 80 miles (130 kilometers) southwest of Mexico City, in the town of Texcaltitlan, when the suspects opened fire on police.

Prosecutors said the detectives seized 20 rifles, pistols and military-style uniforms and bulletproof vests at the scene. The area has been the scene of frequent killings and extortion by drug gangs.

Like scenes out of a narco television series, exotic animals have long been part of the Mexican criminal underworld. On June 15, the Attorney General for Environmental Protection said it had seized a tiger in Tecuala, in the Pacific coast state of Nayarit, near the border with Sinaloa, which is home to the cartel of the same name.

By far, though, my favorite time waster is making display props from hit movies that didn't indulge in merchandising for various reasons, or that whatever merchandise they did create is so rare and obscure as to make it unattainable to the average person. One big stipulation, that I have, is that the props I make need to have form and function. Meaning that, it either has to operate in the same way as it does in the franchise, or it must serve some other practical function besides being a simple display item.

In my top ten list of movies is the film 'The Fifth Element'. Beyond being an amazing film, props and merchandise are extremely difficult to find, and often if you do find something its either an expensive film prop that is profoundly expensive, or a low quality (and equally expensive) representation that can only be bought from specialty sites.

For my project, I wanted to recreate the element stones that were used to kill the 'evil' in the weapon chamber in Egypt. It was evident that the movie versions were made out of polystyrene, but I wanted mine to be a bit more durable and long lasting, and so I ended up manufacturing them out of wood. Also, following my own rules on prop creation, I decided to turn them into functional pillar candle holders that I could use to decorate my dinner table during gatherings, as a conversation piece, or simply as an everyday accent.

One of the problems with creating large triangular blocks is that you need large round blades to cut them properly, and unfortunately my table saw has limitations. The movie version is roughly 9" tall and 4" on each side with a .5" bevel, but because of these limitations, I ended up reducing the sides to 3", with a .5" bevel, though I was able to maintain the 9" length. This turned out to be a bit of a blessing, however, since as a table decoration, their larger size wouldn't have been practical and would have taken up too much space to be usable. If, indeed, you wanted to make perfectly sized 'stones', you can use all of the same techniques outlined in this instructable without much alteration. I'll make notes on the appropriate steps for anyone wanting to make the full size version.
