In just the last few weeks, market and banking regulators in the U.S. have tightened the screws on crypto-related firms. Legislative initiatives in Congress aimed at liberalizing rules for crypto promoters appear to be running out of steam.

Given that the first bitcoin transaction occurred in 2009, Reiners observed that despite "a 14-year track record to look back on,” no one has identified what crypto is good for, except as something people can buy solely on the expectation that they can sell it to someone else at a higher price in the future — which is often described as the "greater fool” theory.

U.S. banking regulators have hardly been blind to this reality. In a joint statement issued Jan. 3, the Federal Reserve, Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. and Office of the Comptroller of the Currency offered a one-stop list of the biggest problems with crypto, many of which paralleled the concerns raised by the Treasury.

They mentioned "the risk of fraud and scams,” "inaccurate or misleading representations and disclosures,” "unfair, deceptive, or abusive” practices and the risks of "cyber-attacks, outages, lost or trapped assets, and illicit finance.”The implicit goal of the joint statement was to warn regulated banks and their customers that they probably should steer clear of crypto at any price.

The immediate trigger for the change of heart in Washington was plainly the November implosion of FTX, a crypto firm whose founder, Sam Bankman-Fried, had been a prominent advocate for looser regulations on crypto firms. Bankman-Fried is free on bail while awaiting trial on criminal charges.

Yet FTX’s bankruptcy was only one of a string of crypto firm failures during 2022, and the precursor of further bankruptcies. Perhaps more important, many of the operational shortcomings allegedly found in FTX’s operations are common in the field, including inadequate record keeping and security arrangements, and commingling of customers’ and firms’ assets.

Consumer interest in crypto was probably destined to wane even without the FTX collapse. Last year’s Super Bowl telecast brimmed with high-priced commercials from crypto firms featuring celebrities such as Matt Damon and Larry David. Supernovas like 2022-vintage crypto are always destined to fade to some extent; this year’s Super Bowl was crypto-free.

In recent weeks and months, however, U.S. regulators have taken strong steps to inoculate the larger banking and financial system against contamination by crypto firm failures.

In January, the Fed rejected an application by Custodia Bank for membership in the Federal Reserve System. Custodia, which is chartered by Wyoming, aimed to issue its own crypto token. "The firm’s novel business model and proposed focus on crypto-assets presented significant safety and soundness risks,” the Fed said.

Last week, New York State banking regulators ordered Paxos Trust to cease issuing crypto tokens with a brand connected to France-based Binance, the world’s largest crypto exchange, because of "several unresolved issues” related to the two firms’ relationship. The Securities and Exchange Commission has also informed Paxos that it may face an SEC lawsuit for selling unregistered securities — the crypto tokens.

Leading technology players are also heavily investing in blockchain: IBM has more than 1,000 staff and $200 million invested in the blockchain-powered Internet of Things (IoT).4

Despite the hype, blockchain is still an immature technology, with a market that is still nascent and a clear recipe for success that has not yet emerged. Unstructured experimentation of blockchain solutions without strategic evaluation of the value at stake or the feasibility of capturing it means that many companies will not see a return on their investments. With this in mind, how can companies determine if there is strategic value in blockchain that justifies major investments?

Approaching the upgrade, and subsequent unlocking of staked Ether, investors had some concerns that a significant proportion would be sold off and cause the value of their portfolio to slide. However, Ether’s price remained reasonably flat prior, during, and after, the upgrade went live, despite withdrawals being processed.

Additional selling pressure on ETH might arise from entities under financial strain. The bankrupt crypto lender Celsius Network may need to sell its staked ETH balance of almost 160,000 ETH to recover funds for creditors. Similarly, Kraken, a prominent US-based crypto exchange, has agreed to shut down its staking operations in order to settle SEC charges. Consequently, Kraken may have to unstake its entire 1.2 million ETH. Now that Ethereum validators can withdraw their stake whenever they wish, there is speculation that more and more investors will become validators and stake their ETH. This not only allows them to earn a reliable, passive income from their assets but it removes ETH from the immediate circulating supply, potentially creating upwards pressure on price as the asset becomes increasingly scarce on the open market.

Validators who stake at least 32 ETH can participate in the block validation process directly but by running their own hardware. However, not everyone can afford to stake that amount, leading to the rise of liquid staking providers such as Lido and RocketPool, or with centralised providers like Coinbase.

Ethereum’s co-founder, Vitalik Buterin, shared his optimism during a Shapella Mainnet Watch Party, stating that the hardest parts of Ethereum’s transition are now over. The Shanghai hard fork also includes four Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs) aimed at improving gas fees for developers. These EIPs address various aspects such as lowering gas costs and capping gas expenses for specific functions. Scaling, which involves making transactions faster and cheaper, is the next challenge for Ethereum after the Shanghai upgrade.

Meanwhile, the latest US inflation data has led crypto investors to monitor the Federal Reserve’s next move, as the consumer price index (CPI) could affect the US central bank’s interest rate decisions. The Reserve Bank of Australia opted to hold the current interest rate steady this month, however, if the US continues to hike, the RBA could be forced to follow or risk affecting the AUD/USD exchange rate, among other things.

When starting to learn Chinese characters, one of the first questions that pop up is how to learn them. I don’t mean what characters to study, how to make sense of Chinese characters or principles for stroke order, but what to do as a beginner to learn your first characters.

When learning almost any other language, writing by hand is not a challenge in itself. Sure, there’s spelling and other things to learn, but that’s at least in principle familiar from other languages we know. Writing Chinese characters is a different beast altogether.Before we start, I want to say a few words of encouragement. Learning Chinese characters as a beginner is challenging, mostly because everything is new and you can’t connect what you need to learn to things you already know. Writing characters is essentially like drawing stylised pictures.

The more you learn, however, the more extensive your web of Chinese knowledge will become, which also means that expanding it further will become easier. The more you know, the easier it becomes to learn even more. You will start recognising components and understand how the fit together to form compounds.

Thus, if you feel that it’s difficult and frustrating at the moment, don’t worry, it will become easier soon! It might feel like you’re drawing pictures, but as your understanding of Chinese characters increases, you will be writing characters soon enough.

As a beginner, you don’t have time to read all that now, though, especially not if you have a test soon, so let’s talk about that! If you have time to spare, investing more of it into understanding Chinese characters is always good, but not always practical. I’ll return to this later, but let’s go through the basics first.

Study the character closely, including stroke order – Before you start to write, study the character you’re going to write carefully. How is it written? What does it look like? If your textbook or teacher didn’t provide you with information about stroke order, you can use apps like Pleco or websites like Archchinese. If you don’t know how to type the character in order to look it up, take a look here. Also, note how the character is pronounced, what it means and if it has any components. If this information is not readily available or doesn’t make sense to you, just ignore it.
Write the character until you get the feel for it – Once you know (in theory) how to write the character, write it until you can write the entire character without thinking too much. This is just to familiarise yourself with the hand motions involved and will help improve your handwriting in general, but it isn’t very good for memorisation. The number of times you need to write a character varies greatly depending on the complexity of the character, but don’t overdo it. Write the characters on a paper with squares of suitable size (a few centimetres). I’ve collected stroke order resources and tools to generate grid paper here.
Don’t copy characters stroke by stroke – If you can remember how to write the whole character in one go, that’s great. If you can’t, break it down into its component parts and peek at the stroke order only between writing each component. Copying stroke by stroke is next to useless, because you’re not even trying to remember anything. The more you try to remember something, the better you will become at actually remembering it.
Once you know the character, don’t mass your repetitions – Even though you have now written the character a few times and can write it from memory if asked to do so right now, this ability will fade very soon. If you want to be able to write the character tomorrow, or maybe even an hour from now, some reviewing is necessary. Some people (including most native speakers) write the same character again and again, hoping that they can etch them into their minds. This works, but it’s very inefficient. Instead, you should spread out your repetitions over time. Write other characters, do some listening practice or just do something else entirely for a bit. Spreading reviews out like this is several times more efficient than writing the same character over and over. While there is software that helps you schedule your reviews effectively, you don’t need to commit to any app or service right now, just do’t mass your repetitions. You can even create your own paper flashcards for your first few weeks of learning while you check out the spaced repetition software on offer.

Tip #1: Keep One Hand on the Keyboard, One on the Mouse
I see a lot of friends and colleagues use the mouse as their main tool for routing and selecting tools in the sidebar, but it’s much easier and faster to use the command line whenever you can.

By using your keyboard, you will omit the time you spend searching for the desired icon and moving mouse pointer back and forth.

My advice is to keep one hand on the mouse to do wiring, etc. inside the editor workspace and use the other hand on the keyboard to write commands and select tools. My advice of using the keyboard is not only for selecting tools. You will see the other benefits of using the keyboard in EAGLE CAD in the rest of this series.

It can be difficult to remember the spelling and the name of every tool. The good news that the command line only needs the smallest accepted spelling to select the tool for you, so you don’t have to write down the complete word.

According to a press release on PRNewswire on Monday (Feb. 1, 2021), Crypto Broker AG, has secured the securities house license from the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority (FINMA). The securities housing license would enable the crypto brokerage startup to offer new products and services including the option to trade security tokens, to banks and other financial service providers.

Commenting on the new license, the CEO and founder of Crypto Finance Group, Jan Brzezek, said that having a licensed broker enables the company to expose its clients to a new digital asset class, while offering regulated and professional services. Crypto Broker AG’s license marks the latest regulatory approval for the Swiss financial market regulatory watchdog. Back in June 2018, Crypto Fund, another subsidiary of Crypto Finance, became the first crypto firm to receive the FINMA operating license. Later that year, Crypto Fund also obtained that asset manager license from the Swiss regulatory watchdog.

FINMA has further issued different licenses to banks to engage in crypto services. As reported by BTCManager back in October 2020, the Swiss arm of major Russian bank Gazprombank got approval from FINMA to offer crypto custodial services. Earlier in the same year, FINMA gave the greenlight to InCore bank to conduct crypto-related transactions.
Switzerland has continued to maintain its reputation as a crypto-friendly region, which has seen cryptocurrency and blockchain startups move and thrive in the country. In September 2020, the "Blockchain Act”, which seeks to regulate the emerging industry, passed through Switzerland’s House of Representatives unopposed.

Meanwhile, the first part of the Blockchain Act covering company law reforms came into effect on February 1, 2021. The second part of the legislation involving financial market infrastructure upgrades would be implemented in August 2021.
